Roughly ten thousand immigrants to Comoros arrive from nearby Madagascar, driven by centuries of maritime trade and deep cultural ties. Geographic proximity and shared history also bring small populations from East African neighbors like Tanzania and Kenya. Meanwhile, a modest community of several hundred French citizens remains due to enduring colonial connections.

Over the past few decades, the immigrant population has slowly and steadily declined. Frequent political crises and a prolonged lack of economic booms in Comoros have largely discouraged new waves of regional migration. As a result, established communities from Madagascar and France have gradually shrunk over time.

Just as immigrants arrive from France and Madagascar, Comorians head to these same nations driven by identical historical ties. Over 230,000 Comorians currently live in France, seeking better career opportunities, higher education, and the familiarity of a shared language. Meanwhile, around 13,000 emigrants reside in neighboring Madagascar, utilizing centuries-old maritime trade routes and geographic proximity.

Emigration has surged dramatically over the last three decades as domestic economic stagnation pushed residents to seek stability abroad. The diaspora in France exploded during this period, transforming into a massive population as successive generations chased better prospects overseas. In contrast, migration to regional destinations like Madagascar has grown only slightly, reflecting a strong shift toward European economic security.
