Over the decades, these migration patterns shifted alongside broader political and economic events. Moroccan immigration dropped by half in the late twentieth century as regional border dynamics evolved and European Union expansions reshaped travel. Conversely, British arrivals steadily doubled as Gibraltar experienced major economic booms in its offshore finance and gaming sectors.

While Gibraltar attracts thousands of workers from nearby Europe, its own emigrants predominantly settle much farther away in Australia. Nearly five hundred Gibraltarians live there today, drawn by a shared language, historic Commonwealth ties, and the appeal of an expansive lifestyle compared to their tiny Mediterranean territory. Over the last three decades, this outward migration remained remarkably stable with only minor shifts reflecting broader global trends. The established community in Australia peaked slightly in the mid-2010s before gradually easing as Gibraltar’s own domestic financial and gaming sectors created lucrative reasons to stay home. Simultaneously, tiny clusters of emigrants slowly grew in countries like Bulgaria and Norway, driven by modern remote work capabilities and specialized industries.
