Over the past few decades, the steady arrival of Italian citizens has grown to several thousand people as cross-border economic integration deepened. Following the fall of the Iron Curtain and subsequent European Union expansions, migrants from places like Romania, Ukraine, and Albania began arriving to fill local labor demands. Regional conflicts and economic shifts in Eastern Europe have further accelerated this trend, slowly diversifying the microstate's historically uniform population.

Mirroring the steady flow of incoming migrants, Sammarinese emigrants almost exclusively settle in neighboring Italy. Around two thousand citizens live just outside the microstate to access broader career opportunities and higher education while enjoying a shared language and completely open borders. A tiny fraction of the population ventures further abroad to other European nations in pursuit of specialized professions.

For decades, this outward migration remained tightly concentrated within the Italian peninsula and fluctuated alongside regional economic cycles. The expansion of European mobility agreements and an increasingly globalized workforce eventually began to slowly broaden these horizons. Modern career opportunities now draw a small number of Sammarinese away from the Mediterranean to wealthy northern economies like Denmark, Norway, and Luxembourg.
