Immigrant Origins

Countries where immigrants living in Tuvalu were born in 2024, ranked by number of people.

Immigrants to Tuvalu mostly arrive from neighboring Pacific nations like Kiribati, Fiji, Samoa, and Nauru. This movement is driven by geographic proximity and deep colonial ties, particularly with Kiribati, which shared a British administration with Tuvalu for many decades. A small number of Americans also relocate here, though the entire immigrant population is very intimate and consists of just a couple hundred people.

Over the past few decades, the overall number of foreign arrivals steadily declined as economic opportunities shifted toward larger regional economies. Fiji was the primary source of immigrants in the late twentieth century due to its status as a commercial and educational hub, but Kiribati eventually overtook it as strong post-colonial and familial bonds persisted. At the same time, the American presence shrank to just a handful of individuals as historical administrative and post-war roles slowly faded.

Emigrant Destinations

Countries where people born in Tuvalu were living in 2024, ranked by number of people.

Just as neighboring Pacific nations supply most of Tuvalu's immigrants, they also serve as the primary destinations for those leaving the islands. Emigrants largely settle in Fiji and Kiribati, drawn by the same deep familial bonds and shared colonial history that drive inbound migration. Fiji acts as a major commercial and educational hub for the Pacific, offering broader career opportunities and university access for a few hundred Tuvaluan expatriates.

Emigration patterns shifted significantly as regional economies transformed over the last few decades. In the late twentieth century, hundreds of Tuvaluans lived in Nauru to work in its lucrative phosphate mining industry, but this community plummeted as the mines depleted. Meanwhile, Australia emerged as an increasingly popular destination, with nearly three hundred Tuvaluans relocating there today in search of greater economic stability and expanded employment pathways.
