Mozambique

Most immigrants arriving in Mozambique come from neighboring African nations, driven by deep historical ties, porous borders, and cross-border trade. People from nearby Zimbabwe and Malawi make up the largest groups, with roughly a hundred thousand Zimbabweans currently living in the country. A shared Portuguese colonial history and language also attract tens of thousands of migrants from Angola, Cape Verde, and Portugal.

Over the past three decades, the total immigrant population expanded steadily as Mozambique stabilized following its own civil war. Regional crises dramatically reshaped these arrival patterns, particularly the severe economic downturn in Zimbabwe that pushed continuous waves of migrants across the border starting in the early 2000s. Meanwhile, ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi brought a recent surge of refugees seeking safety and new opportunities.

Just as deep regional ties bring migrants into Mozambique, they also shape where Mozambicans choose to build new lives. South Africa is the primary destination today, drawing over four hundred thousand people seeking better wages and career opportunities in the neighboring economic powerhouse. Beyond the immediate region, shared language and a complex colonial history create a strong bridge to Europe, pulling tens of thousands of Mozambicans to Portugal.

These emigration patterns look vastly different today than they did three decades ago during the height of Mozambique's civil war. In the early 1990s, over a million Mozambicans sought refuge in neighboring Malawi and hundreds of thousands fled across the borders to Zimbabwe and Tanzania. As peace returned to Mozambique, these massive refugee populations largely went home, while post-apartheid economic growth transformed South Africa into the new dominant magnet for labor migration.
