Most immigrants to Namibia come from neighboring African nations and former administrators in search of economic opportunity and stability. People from Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa make up the largest groups due to shared borders, regional trade, and deep historical connections. Additionally, around ten thousand Germans continue to live in the country as a reflection of enduring colonial-era ties.

This migration story has shifted dramatically in response to regional conflicts and changing global partnerships. A massive influx of Angolans arrived around the turn of the century to escape their nation's violent civil war, while recurring economic crises in Zimbabwe steadily drove more people across the border. In recent decades, expanding infrastructure projects and trade agreements have also brought several thousand Chinese immigrants to the country.

Just as neighboring nations provide the most immigrants to Namibia, they are also the primary destinations for Namibians moving abroad. Tens of thousands of Namibians live in South Africa, drawn by deep historical integration, geographical proximity, and shared languages. Others cross into nearby Botswana, Zambia, and Angola to pursue regional trade and career opportunities within the familiar southern African economy.

While South Africa remains the top destination, the number of Namibians living there has gradually declined since independence as citizens look further abroad. Emigration to Australia has recently surged, attracting nearly two thousand people seeking new lifestyles and lucrative roles in a similar global mining sector. Additionally, enduring historical missionary and educational partnerships maintain a steady flow of Namibians relocating to Nordic nations like Finland and Norway.
