Geographic proximity, shared Islamic heritage, and a common Arabic language also bring well over a million immigrants each from neighboring Yemen and Egypt.

The origin of these immigrants shifted dramatically as rapid infrastructure booms in the early 2000s demanded a massive influx of South Asian labor. At the same time, regional instability and devastating wars drove hundreds of thousands of people from Syria, Yemen, and Sudan to seek safety and work across the border. These dual forces of economic expansion and regional crises transformed the country into a global destination for those fleeing hardship.

Although Saudi Arabia is primarily a destination for migrants, tens of thousands of people born in the Kingdom have built lives abroad. Regional destinations like Turkiye, Libya, and Palestine host large communities drawn by deep cultural ties, shared heritage, and strong family networks. Meanwhile, Western nations like Canada and Australia attract tens of thousands more seeking advanced education, specialized career paths, and diverse lifestyle opportunities.

In the 1990s, emigration was largely confined to neighboring Arab states or driven by expatriate families relocating to countries like India. This pattern shifted dramatically in the 2000s as globalized economies and expanded government scholarship programs sent a new wave of students and professionals to North America and Europe. More recently, Turkiye has emerged as the top destination, with over sixty thousand Saudi-born residents taking advantage of favorable real estate investments, accessible residency policies, and a familiar cultural climate.
