Immigrant Origins

Countries where immigrants living in Bhutan were born in 2024, ranked by number of people.

The vast majority of immigrants to Bhutan arrive from its immediate neighbors, driven by geographic proximity and deep economic ties. India accounts for tens of thousands of residents due to a long-standing friendship treaty that allows free movement for trade and labor. Smaller groups of migrants from China and Nepal also cross the borders, drawn by regional commerce and shared Himalayan cultural connections.

Over the past three decades, these regional populations steadily grew as Bhutan modernized and initiated massive infrastructure projects. A continuous economic boom in hydropower and road construction fueled a strong demand for foreign labor, consistently pulling in larger waves of workers. Meanwhile, strict national policies designed to preserve traditional culture have intentionally kept migration from the rest of the world extremely limited.

Emigrant Destinations

Countries where people born in Bhutan were living in 2024, ranked by number of people.

While Bhutan primarily pulls in labor from its neighbors, its own emigrants are increasingly moving across the globe for higher education and better careers. Today, nations like Australia and Canada attract tens of thousands of Bhutanese drawn by modern lifestyles and lucrative professional opportunities. At the same time, neighboring countries like Nepal and India still host large populations rooted in complex historical ties and regional proximity.

This global dispersion is a dramatic shift from the late twentieth century, when severe political turmoil drove over a hundred thousand people across the border to seek refuge in Nepal. As international resettlement programs later relocated many of these individuals to North America and Europe, the regional population sharply declined. More recently, a lack of domestic opportunities has triggered a massive new wave of voluntary migration, sending a rapidly growing number of young professionals to Australia in search of a better future.
