These migration patterns shifted drastically during the early nineties when a severe local economic crash forced thousands of residents to seek financial stability abroad. The overall outflow eventually stabilized as the Faroese economy recovered and local industries expanded. Today, a strong job market in Iceland attracts a growing number of Faroese workers, while a few individuals are pursuing new opportunities in Eastern Europe.
