The outbreak of the Sierra Leonean civil war in the 1990s drove well over a hundred thousand people into Liberia in search of immediate safety. As that crisis eventually stabilized, subsequent political violence and armed conflict in Ivory Coast triggered new waves of displacement before overall immigration gradually declined in recent years.

Just as regional ties bring West Africans to Liberia, shared cultural roots and porous borders draw Liberians to neighboring nations. Today, tens of thousands of Liberians live in regional economic hubs like Ghana and Nigeria to pursue career and trade opportunities. During the height of Liberia's civil wars in the 1990s, nearly half a million people fled across the borders into Guinea and Sierra Leone to escape the violence. As peace was finally restored in the early 2000s, these massive displaced populations gradually returned home, transforming outward migration from desperate flight into an intentional economic strategy.
