Most immigrants to Vietnam arrive from neighboring Asian nations like China, South Korea, Japan, and Cambodia. Geographic proximity and shared cultural histories drive much of this regional movement. Today, well over a hundred thousand expatriates live in the country to pursue new economic opportunities and lucrative business ventures.

In the early nineties, post-war recovery and border trade brought mostly Cambodian migrants into the country. As Vietnam opened its markets and experienced rapid industrial growth, this demographic shifted heavily toward East Asian economic powerhouses. Driven by a massive boom in foreign investment, tens of thousands of professionals from China and South Korea now make up the vast majority of new arrivals.

Millions of Vietnamese emigrants have built lives overseas, driven by historical ties and the search for better economic opportunities. The United States remains the primary destination, home to nearly a million and a half Vietnamese who originally arrived through post-war resettlement and later family reunification. Other Western nations like Australia, Canada, and France also host massive diaspora communities drawn by strong educational systems and established cultural networks.

In the decades following the Vietnam War, emigration was almost exclusively directed toward Western countries offering asylum and new beginnings. However, as Asia's economy boomed, the flow of migrants shifted dramatically toward regional neighbors. Today, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese citizens move to Japan and South Korea to fill crucial labor shortages and pursue lucrative technical careers.
