8,780 corridors
International migration has grown rapidly, with the total global migrant stock doubling from 139.9 million people in 1990 to 279.1 million in 2024. The largest bilateral migration flows exist primarily because people cross nearby borders seeking better wages or escaping instability. For example, 11.3 million Mexicans moved to the United States for economic opportunity, while 3.8 million Afghans fled decades of conflict to live in neighboring Iran.
Global migration corridors have shifted significantly over the last three decades as new wars and economic collapses forced people from their homes. Recent crises created massive new paths, like the 3.6 million Syrians who fled to Turkiye and the 2.9 million Venezuelans who moved to Colombia. Meanwhile, older historical movements have faded, with the population of Russians living in Ukraine dropping from 5.0 million in 1990 to 3.4 million today.
The United States leads the list of countries with the most immigrants, hosting 48.5 million people today. Germany follows with an immigrant population of 13.6 million. Saudi Arabia and Canada also rank at the top, housing 13.4 million and 8.7 million foreign-born residents respectively.
Destination patterns shifted significantly over the last three decades as labor demands and regional crises reshaped global movement. The United Arab Emirates grew from 1.3 million to 7.9 million migrants as rapid infrastructure development required foreign workers. Meanwhile, nations like Turkiye and Colombia experienced massive spikes to 6.8 million and 3.0 million respectively due to neighboring conflicts and open-door refugee policies.

When asking where do migrants come from, India leads the world with a massive diaspora of 18.5 million people living abroad today. Mexico follows with 11.6 million citizens overseas, while China ranks third with 11.4 million. Ukraine also accounts for a huge share of global emigration, reaching 9.8 million people displaced by recent conflicts.
Over the last three decades, wars and economic collapse triggered explosive growth in several regions. Syria jumped from just 0.3 million people abroad in 1990 to 8.9 million today due to a devastating civil war. At the same time, severe political and economic crises pushed Venezuela from 0.2 million to 8.3 million citizens leaving the country to survive.
